The Utah Saints were among 12 artists approached by the charity Shelter to collaborate on a charity record. Each of these 12 artists were asked to produce their own cover version of the Rolling Stones song Gimme Shelter; these were then released, 3 tracks across each of 4 valid formats (CD, cassette and 2x12"), to create a CD single that was valid for the UK charts.
The record was not as successful as planned, perhaps because the popular radio versions (Jimmy Somerville & Voice Of The Beehive) were on the poor-selling cassette single format.
Availability: The commercial 12" is moderately rare. Not as rare as a very rare thing, but rarer than some.
One to look out for: The promo CD that was sent out for the project, which included all 12 of the different artists' versions. Copies of this promo CD have gone for up to $212 on the eBay auction site, mainly (it seems) thanks to the interest of avid Jimmy Somerville fans from Germany.
One to avoid: The other promo CD that was sent out for the project, which included 5 different artists' versions- not including the Utah Saints. I recently bought this for a couple of quid, for the Pop Will Eat Itself version.
Comments / notes: The Utahs also performed this track whilst on tour, with Jez himself doing the lead vocals. They also performed it at an "Off The Streets" benefit gig in Leeds in 1993, with Andrew Eldritch from the Sisters of Mercy guesting on vocals (he also performed with them on New Gold Dream).
