UTAH SAINTS: POWER TO THE BEATS

Questions

If you have a question that isn't answered here or elsewhere on this site, then please contact me. I enjoy Utah mail, it's as simple as that- but I can't promise an answer to everything...

The most commonly asked questions:

Q: Why are they called the Utah Saints? Are they from the Utah? Are they Mormons?

A: This is the single subject question that I get e-mailled about more than all the other topics put together. No, they're not Mormons, no they're not from Utah (they're from England), and the name comes partly from the final lines spoken in one of their favourite films, Raising Arizona. However, there isn't an absolute answer. So please don't e-mail me for one.

Q: Where can I get original Utah Saints CDs/12"s/etc.?

A: This depends on exactly what you're looking for. The following things are very easy to find or still in print: Utah Saints (first album), Something Good 7-track single, Two (second album), Love Song, Funky Music, Power To The Beats.

For anything else, try joining the Yahoo Groups discussion list, looking at the links page, or e-mailling me as I often have spare copies of some Utah Saints material.

Q: Where can I see them live?

Since new dates are being announced, and some cancelled, every once in a while, this answer is now found on the news page rather than here.

Q: Before Love Song, where have the Utah Saints been for the last five years?

A: The Utah Saints never really went away as such, they just happen not to have released a Utah Saints record since 1995- they have carried on writing, remixing, and DJing internationally. If it hadn't been for problems with Star (unreleased for record company reasons), Rock (unreleased for copyright reasons) and Technowledgy (unreleased for commercial reasons), the Utahs would have had at least three singles out in this time, and probably another album if not more. But they've been biding their time, ready for 2000...

Q: Where can I get the Utah Saints bootlegs mentioned in the discography?

A: If you want to know the answer to this, I'd suggest joining the Utah Saints list on Yahoo Groups (see the mailing list page) and asking around nicely. For obvious reasons, the guy responsible for them doesn't make that fact too public...

Q: What's that song they did that goes, "did I dream, I dreamt about you..."?

A: This isn't a Utah Saints track, but for some reason I've been e-mailled by half a dozen different people who for some reason believed that it was a Utah Saints track, so I've put the answer here... It's a track by a band called Messiah, track name is Temple Of Dreams. It can be found on the 21st Century Jesus album, which incidentally I recommend although it's a little more 'rave' than the Utah Saints album released around the same time.

I received an e-mail from an old friend of Tim's from "back in the day" who said that the Utah Saints had thought about using the "did I dream..." line for one of their tracks, but Messiah beat them to it. A similar thing happened to stop "New Gold Dream" being a single, because Urusa's "Open Your Mind" was released using a sample of the Simple Minds song that the Utah Saints had already covered for their album.

Q: It is true that the Utah Saints did a cover version of the Pet Shop Boys track It's A Sin? Where can I get it?

A: This question gets asked occasionally- it seems that some time ago somebody put around this rumour on the Internet, and every once in a while it crops up again.

However, from the band themselves, the Utah Saints have never covered It's A Sin, nor were they ever planning to. They didn't actually know where the rumour may have come from.

Q: Where can I find the remix they did for New Order?

A: This is another one of those non-existent remixes that occasionally gets asked about, but in this case there's slightly more justification. When New Order were putting out their 2CD set of greatest hits & remixes, they put out some early promotional flyers and posters etc. which included the statement "including mixes by ..., Utah Saints, ...".

However this was before the remix was actually done, and due to other circumstances, the Utah Saints never did actually remix a New Order track. As far as I know it was never even decided which track they were to take on.
