You can find samples of the album Two on the official Utah Saints web site here, and new samples of forthcoming Utah releases at www.utahsaints.info! No point duplicating those here, so here's a selection of other material.
Items appearing in this colour are currently offline due to webspace limitations.
A small part of DJ Tim's set at the Leeds Love Parade a few years ago, as broadcast on local radio station Galaxy 105 (hence the announcer at the beginning and near the end of the clip). The first track played is called "Return Of The Original Artform" by Major Force (thanks Santo for the information). If anyone knows which is the other record Tim is spinning during this clip, please let me know! Format: MP3 | Filesize: 1022k | Duration:
4:21 Another track from the Utah Saints' live performance at the Electronic Beats Festival in Cologne in 2001. A selection of new FX and sounds on this on top of the album version sounds. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 573k | Duration:
1:57 <> This is the longer and more sparse of the two remixes that the Utahs did of Spek's track "Smell The Coffee". Unfortunately, despite being used in a couple of BBC trailers, the main version of this track didn't get much radio or press attention, so this great bass-heavy breaks mix went mostly unnoticed. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 912k | Duration:
1:56 This, along with the rest of "Love Song", appeared on a Cornerstone Player compilation, a regular compilation of forthcoming releases in the US. Somebody at the Cornerstone Player went to a bit of trouble putting the "I Want You"-based sting together. I've never worked out whether 'Salvatore Ascani' is a real person (perhaps someone who works at Cornerstone Player) who came up with the idea of mixing the intro from the Monetshot mix of the track into the original version, or whether it's a cover for the Utahs themselves, as this is how the album version turned out (except that the mixing on the album version is improved from this). Format: MP3 | Filesize: 201k | Duration:
0:52 I don't know much about this set, that I found thanks to Ravexchange. It's Tim doing the DJing (though I can't identify the tracks), and I don't know who the MC is. All I know is that it's a very fun piece of old school (or should that be old skool?) rave... Format: MP3 | Filesize: 460k | Duration:
2:36 One of Tim's DJ tricks- playing the acapella of Missy Elliot's "Get Ur Freak On" over a track from Aphrodite ("Hype The Funk" I think, but I'm not sure). When DJing together as the Utah Saints, they normally play breaks and techno, but when DJing on his own, DJ Tim spins with a more hip-hop feel- and plenty of cleverly placed acapellas. 1:30 From the best Utah Saints gig I ever attended, their triumphant appearance at the Reading Festival. This was only the third track of the set and already the crowd were incredibly loud- and among other tracks, there was still "Funky Music", "Something Good", and "Rock" to follow. This is the only time that the Utahs used a sample of The KLF's "What Time Is Love" and made it a part of "What Can You Do For Me". Blends together pretty well, if you ask me... unfortunately on this version (broadcast by Radio 1) the "What Time Is Love" element isn't as audible in the mix as it was for the people there at the time. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 543k | Duration:
1:51 There are two different versions of Paul Oakenfold & Steve Osborne's remix of "I Still Think Of You", although both were labelled "Perfecto mix". The mix on the UK 12" (and on the bootleg "Collection") was a little shorter, and had a much simpler intro, with the main groove slowly fading in. However the version on the European CD single is a little longer and has this quite atmospheric and dramatic synth opening, which personally I prefer. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 807k | Duration:
2:17 From Arthur Baker's 2001 album "Breakin'" where he collaborated with a selection of different artists, including Rennie Pilgrem, Lee Coombs, Felix Da Housecat, Dave Clarke, Timo Maas, Armand Van Helden and Paul Oakenfold. And this was track 1... Format: MP3 | Filesize: 637k | Duration:
1:48 The Utahs eventually arrived at the album version of "Power To The Beats" by combining elements from two tracks that had appeared seperately on early demo versions of the album- the vocal and effects from a track already called "Power To The Beats", and most of the instrumental parts from this demo track simply titled "Metallica". Format: MP3 | Filesize: 251k | Duration:
1:03 One of the Utah Saints' heaviest remixes, part of Psycore's "The Zoo" single that was released at almost the same time as "Love Song" in 2000. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 564k | Duration:
1:55 This is the other B-side from the MDMA "Escape" 12" (see below), alongside the track "Utah Saints". This track is very reminiscent of some of the longer tracks on the first Utah Saints album as well. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 461k | Duration:
1:34 Prior to Utah Saints, Jez Willis was a member of MDMA. By the time of their final 12" Escape in 1990, (I think) all the other band members had left and it was essentially a Jez Willis solo project. One of the B-sides of this 12" was a track called Utah Saints, which bears a big resemblance to the track States Of Mind on the first Utah Saints album. So this track is a key part of the evolution of the Utah Saints... etc. etc... Format: MP3 | Filesize: 483k | Duration:
1:38 This was one of the tracks from the Stone Roses "Remixes" album released in 2000, alongside mixes of other classic Stone Roses tracks by Jon Carter, Justin Robertson, Paul Oakenfold, 808 State, A Guy Called Gerald and Mint Royale, among others. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 521k | Duration:
1:46 It was the main Oliver Lieb vocal mix that really got attention for Lost Vagueness- this dub version was only available on promo 12". For most of the track it's as you'd expect, just the vocal mix with the vocals taken off, but in the first breakdown section, Lieb adds an extra element to fill the space. It's quite melancholic even without the Chrissie Hynde lyrics... Format: MP3 | Filesize: 481k | Duration:
1:38 An extract from an hour-long DJ mix sent out by the Echo Label as a promo CD in early 2001. This is from near the end of the mix, where Tim is laying the acapella version of "Power To The Beats" over the classic track "Access" by DJ Misjah & DJ Tim (no relation). The live effects you can hear come (I think) from one of the Utahs' Korg Kaos pads. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 493k | Duration:
1:40 Taken from the 1988 live album Feel The Width, which features Jez Willis (later of the Utah Saints) on keyboards, bass guitar and backing vocals, and Keith Langley (later the Utah Saints' drummer and source of the Utah rap) on 'drum guitar' (?) and screaming. The CD also includes pictures of and short messages by each band member, and shows Jez with Top Gun style sunglasses and very big hair indeed. Ah, the benefit of hindsight... Jez Willis has no writing credit on this album (unlike the later spin-off MDMA), which to be honest is probably a good thing! Format: MP3 | Filesize: 412k | Duration:
1:45 The album version of "Punk Club" is less than two minutes long, but the Utahs reworked their Michael Stipe collaboration into almost four minutes for their live performances in 2000 and 2001- including some phrases from Stipe that don't appear on the album. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 566k | Duration:
1:55 This remix of Power To The Beats, by Trick Or Treat- probably most famous for their cover/remix of Baby D "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" which reached the UK top 20- was only ever released on a promo 12" along with some of the Todd Edwards mixes. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 319k | Duration:
1:05 This instrumental version of the Utah Saints' great remix of the classic Simple Minds track I Travel is only available on a promo 12". Even the full-length mix is now quite difficult to find. In my opinion, one of the best remixes the Utah Saints have ever done. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 504k | Duration:
1:42 A bootleg from a white label 12" apparently produced by the Utah Saints, combining Primal Scream's Loaded with the acapella of Spek's I'm a Hippie. When the sample couldn't get cleared, the track was re-recorded with similar-sounding instruments by a bunch of producers called the Millionaires (formerly known as the Beatmasters), for the single release. This is the original version with genuine Primal Scream sounds... Format: MP3 | Filesize: 501k | Duration:
1:42 The longest (and nearly complete) broadcast version of the unreleased short Utah track Intro, as performed at the Electronic Beats festival in Cologne 2001. This version features the Led Zeppelin sample, but doesn't include a sample from "Everybody's Talking At Me" which was part of Intro for their gigs in 2000. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 376k | Duration:
1:16 A Radio 1-edited version of Intro from the broadcast of their set when supporting Leftfield. The voice at the beginning is that of Steve Lamacq, who was presenting the evening for Radio 1. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 180k | Duration:
0:36 MDMA was the band that Jez Willis and drummer Keith Langley were in after they left Cassandra Complex and before Utah Saints. This is from one of their later releases. I'm still seeking the MDMA 'album' (a compilation of their earlier 12"s), ECSCD001, if anyone has any ideas where to find it please please let me know. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 565k | Duration:
1:22 Only available on the charity compilation CD Off The Streets (copies turn up on eBay sometimes), this is an alternative version of the Utahs' biggest hit to date. The intro is the section that's most different, and features beats elements that later turned up in DJ Tim's Funky Bliss mix of Believe In Me. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 341k | Duration:
0:58 Edwin Starr and the Utah Saints' biggest festival appearance, at Reading 2000. After their appearance the previous day at the Leeds part had been frought with technical problems, the Reading performance was stunning. A huge crowd watched anthemic performances and the reception for Edwin Starr was, as you'll hear, amazing. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 504k | Duration:
1:04 When the Utahs performed live in 2000 & 2001 and Edwin Starr wasn't available to join them, they performed a very different version of Funky Music, based heavily on the Monetshot remix of the track, with parts of the radio edit layered on top. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 428k | Duration:
1:49 Utah Saints produced two quite different remixes for Spek's Smell The Coffee release. The club mix (darker, longer, almost no vocal) appeared on the CD release, and on promo 12"s, but the shorter vocal mix is much harder to find. It's a more 'pop' version, remaining true to the vocals but adding some of the Utahs' more funky- dare I say cheeky? probably- noises. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 389k | Duration:
1:39 The studio version of this live favourite has never been released, although it was going to be a single back in 1997 before being pulled. The Utahs' loudest and noisest offering all round... we salute it. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 501k | Duration:
2:05 This recently appeared as part of a 'Mid-Tempo Assortment' mix available from Tom Chi's music web page. I believe that this is a bootleg made by putting a sample from What Can You Do For Me on top of somebody else's record, but as yet I haven't worked out which record that is. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 422k | Duration:
1:47 The promo-only short version of the Utah Saints mix, which contains a few extra elements than the commercially available extended mix Format: MP3 | Filesize: 326k | Duration:
1:06 The Taxi Driver-sampling demo version of the track from Two. The demo version is also shorter than the Guy Leger-spoken version that eventually appeared. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 616k | Duration:
1:17 A clip from a Utah Saints DJ mix only released on a hard-to-find Cornerstone Player promo CD- mixing together Daft Punk and Public Enemy, with special effects. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 331k | Duration:
1:24 This version is a more succinct mix than appeared on Two, and it features the Ofra Haza samples that were dropped from the finished version. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 720k | Duration:
1:32 Taken from the hard-to-find remix album "Zipcode". Format: MP3 | Filesize: 651k | Duration:
1:23 Currently only available on a US dance compilation. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 563k | Duration:
1:12 A demo version of the track, radically different (in fact every element different!) from the version eventually released. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 636k | Duration:
1:21 The first bonus track from the Japan-only edition of the album Two. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 422k | Duration:
0:53 The other bonus track from the Japan-only edition of the new album Two. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 370k | Duration:
0:47 The mental Utah track so far only released as part of the PC game Carmaggedon TDR2000. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 447k | Duration:
0:57 Part of the longer version of Techknowledgy; the shorter version is on the Two album. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 349k | Duration:
0:44 The promo-only dub mix of Rob Searle's take on Power To The Beats, with (in my opinion) a better breakdown than the main mix. Format: MP3 | Filesize: 493k | Duration:
